1 Presentation

The Avante Journal is a free, open-access, biannual, interdisciplinary journal published by the Civil Police Academy of Minas Gerais. The journal aims to disseminate technical-scientific and professional knowledge in areas related to Public Security and the Judicial Police. The Avante Journal accepts submissions every six months through a call for papers, including original articles, review articles, and case reports.

1.1 Mission

The journal has two main missions: 1) To disseminate high-quality, peer-reviewed technical and scientific advances in public security and the judicial police. 2) To provide a platform for the discussion and development of theoretical and practical results from Police Sciences, engaging communities of interest.

1.2 Vision

The Avante Journal aspires to be recognized as a leading source for the dissemination of knowledge and innovation in police sciences. This includes promoting transdisciplinary integration, the dissemination of evidence-based police practices, and the continuous development of public security and criminal justice.

1.3 Values

The key values of the Avante Journal are:

  • Broad and free dissemination of advances in Police Sciences, contributing to a more informed and safer society.
  • Maintaining high standards of quality, impartiality and fairness in the peer-review process.
  • Commitment to rigorous ethical practices, including research originality, honest presentation of results, open data, and responsible conduct of studies.

2 Focus and Scope

The Avante Journal publishes three main types of contributions: original research articles, review articles, and case reports.

Original Articles: These are works presenting data from experimental, observational, or data analysis studies. They should be limited to 25 pages.

Review Articles: These are works that summarize, analyze, evaluate or synthesize research previously published in scientific journals. Review articles should be limited to 20 pages.

Case Reports: These are articles that present descriptive data of one or more relevant cases, contributing to current scientific knowledge. Each case report should be limited to 15 pages.

The journal's key thematic areas include: Criminology; Judicial Police; Police Intelligence and Geoprocessing; Statistics and Criminal Analysis; Sociology and Psychology; Governance and Management in Public Security; Technology and Forensic Sciences; Human Rights, Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure; Civil and Social Defense; Education in Public Security.

2.1 Frequency

The magazine is published continuously in June and December with continuous publication.

2.2 Ethics Policy

The Editorial Board will review each submission to prevent and address violations of research ethics and good scientific editorial practices, including those outlined in Resolutions No. 466 (12/12/12) and No. 510 (04/07/2016) of the National Health Council of Brazil. If necessary, the board will require authors, reviewers and editors to provide appropriate documentation and clarifications, or the contribution may not be accepted.

Contributions will not be accepted for publication, and may face legal challenges, if there is evidence of improper use of third-party copyrights, plagiarism, or conflicts of interest between reviewers and authors. Acceptance of each submission is contingent on meeting these requirements.

2.3 Open Access Policy

The Avante Journal is committed to the broad and free dissemination of advances in Police Sciences, contributing to the global democratization of knowledge and a more informed and safer society. The journal offers immediate open access to its content, adhering to the core values of Open Science.

Specifically, the journal:

  • Makes content available in open access.
  • Accepts articles published in preprint repositories and encourages authors to share previous versions of their work.
  • Follows the Open Science Green model, allowing authors to submit preprint, postprint, and final versions without embargo periods or fees (APC - Article Processing Charges).
  • Recommends that authors deposit data and research materials in data repositories.
  • Identifies the associate editor responsible for the evaluation process and offers the option to publish reviewer opinions with or without identifying the reviewers.

2.4 Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA)

The Avante Journal is committed to promoting and disseminating knowledge as a common good, with equity and justice, in alignment with the principles of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA). This effort supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG/UN), particularly goals: 3 - Good health and well-being; 4 - Quality Education; 5 - Gender equality; 8 - Decent work and economic growth; 10 - Reduced inequalities; 11 - Sustainable cities and economies; 16 - Peace, justice and strong institutions.
